In the last two weeks I have spent two days bouldering and two days sport climbing and loved every minute of it.

As far as what I have been getting on I jumped on the Joker (V6) in Canberra and fell off the final move 3 times (something I will have to correct next time I am in town) and a whole bunch of routes in Nowra. The highlight was probably Killer boas which I ticked and Crime is art which I almost did (yet another one for next time). The cancer had spread by the time it was discovered so the treatment regime decided upon was one of intensive chemo therapy and radiotherapy over about 12 to 14 months (for any other cancer patients out there the chemo I am on is VDC and IE alternately). I'm starting this blog about 7 months into the treatment to try and share with anybody interested my latest attempt to keep myself sane during the treatment. An attempt to rock climb at the best level I can while on the chemo therapy.

This might seem to be a strange thing to try and achieve while on a treatment regime that leaves most people on it (including me) tired and almost incapable of physical activity. My favourite example is Lance Armstrong being overtaken on his bike by an older lady with a mountain bike with a basket on it. But its exactly these reasons that make me want to try this. I have climbed for the past 5 years and loved it, the challenge, the locations, the people, and just because I am now faced with a life threatening illness and the results of the treatment of that illness I see no reason to stop.

But for me its more than wanting to keep doing this sport that I love. It's my way of keeping an eye on the future, of proving that we can always be stronger than the things that try and bring us down.

So what does all this mean? Basically I am now training on plastic (rock climbing holds) a couple of times a week and am doing yoga and swimming to try and keep fit and in shape. The other day I managed to get out to Nowra for a day of climbing and managed to lead some 17 and "Taste my spinning blades of steel" (20). I took some video of blades of steal and will put it up as soon as I have edited it. In the meantime here is some footage that I took of Ryan Holmes on Lipstick the 25 around the corner from spinning blades (nothing to do with me but its cool footage none the less).

for the full HD version of the video check out my vimeo page at

This isn't a viedeo of me but of my good friend Ryan Holmes climbing Lipstick at Nowra.
